Oesophageal manometry is the study that evaluates the motility of the oesophagus and its sphincters.

Esophageal manometry consists of placing a small flexible tube through the nose into the stomach, which registers pressure at different levels and is connected to a recording device that transmits the information to a computer.

During the test, the probe will be gently withdrawn to take different measurements, sometimes requiring the patient to alternatively swallow and stop swallowing small amounts of water.

It is advisable to perform it once organic lesions of the oesophagus have been ruled out by gastroscopy or oesophagogram.
